To the Massanutten Community:
We wish we had better news, but as you’ve probably heard, the Board of Supervisors and the new Massanutten Water Authority, in their joint meeting, tabled (postponed) the decision to make a formal offer to acquire MPSC’s assets. According to Great Eastern representatives at the meeting, the Supervisors made the decision to allow MPSC time to provide the County and the Authority with information that it asked them to consider.
The County’s appraisal report indicates a fair market value of $25.8 million dollars for the entirety of MPSC’s water and wastewater systems. The report is 113 pages long and was prepared to comply with two separate sets of national appraisal standards. MPSC was not at all cooperative with the County’s valuation process, and could have provided any information it wanted to long ago. Additionally, MPSC made it clear at the meeting that it is not for sale and does not want to be acquired.
We (and our attorney) appeared at the public hearing and spoke in support of the purchase. We thank four MPOA owners/representatives who attended the meeting and who are also supporting the County’s efforts to purchase or condemn the MPSC assets. This issue may be back before the Board of Supervisors soon; we’ll do our best to keep you informed. A larger turnout from the community at the next meeting would almost certainly be valuable! In the meantime, don’t be shy to contact the Board of Supervisors and the County Administrator. Please open those links in new tabs. Your voice WILL matter.
We hope this is simply a short-term delay. Although we’re disappointed, we respect the Board of Supervisors’ diligence in ensuring that any action taken is well-advised. We’ll continue to work closely with MPOA to bring this situation to resolution.
Wishing you and yours a wonderful holiday season –
