To the Massanutten Community:
We’re gearing up for what promises to be a fun summer season. Here are a few updates that may interest those in our community.
MPSC/SCC UPDATE: Recently, MPOA joined the case before the State Corporation Commission regarding MPSC’s proposed rate increase. We’re grateful for that and congratulate MPOA for its efforts. So that you know, on Thursday the Resort filed a motion to dismiss the rate case with the SCC, on the basis that the County’s condemnation of MPSC’s water and sewer systems makes a forward-looking rate increase application unnecessary. MPOA has supported that motion. A motion to dismiss a utility’s rate case is rare (almost unprecedented), but we were pleased to see the SCC staff respond in a way we considered helpful. As of now, the Resort, MPOA and Rockingham County are all in remarkable harmony in opposition to the proposed rate increase. We expect to be able to report more soon.
WATERPARK OPEN HOUSE: Our annual Open House at the WaterPark – which invites Massanutten residents to enjoy the WaterPark free of charge – will be on Friday, June 21 at 5:00 p.m. Pre-registration is required; you may reserve your slot by clicking here. ROCK THE RIDGE RECAP: The Rock the Ridge Festival, produced by the Massanutten Technical Center (MTC) Foundation and hosted by the resort, had a very successful launch. It’s too soon to say if it will return next summer, but the vibe was great and guests and MTC seemed very pleased! The next festival on our schedule is our annual Summer Jam; that’s coming up on the July 4 weekend. Proceeds for that event, as always, go to the Rockingham/Harrisonburg SPCA.
MOUNTAIN COASTER: We’re disappointed to report that construction on the new Mountain Coaster is going more slowly than we’d hoped. Our current projection for opening is sometime around Labor Day Weekend. We’d love to ride it sooner, but we’re certain it will be worth the wait. Although there are builds using this design in Europe, Massanutten’s will be the first mountain coaster of its kind in North America.
EVER DONE AN ESCAPE ROOM? If you’re not familiar with the concept of escape rooms, consider it a combination of puzzle and mystery for a group of up to ten. You enter the attraction and work with your party to solve the mystery and open the door. We’ve run them for several years, and we’re re-theming one of them to reflect the local area – this one will be kid- and grandkid-friendly. FARMERS’ MARKET: The Massanutten Farmers’ Market is now open for the season. Located adjacent to the Woodstone building, the Market brings fresh local produce, preserves, baked goods and crafts to the resort every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. to noon. We expect it to run at least through the end of August.
RALPH SAMPSON BASKETBALL CAMP: The Camp returns for its third season! Hosted by five-time NBA All-Star Ralph Sampson, the Camp is for kids ages 9-16 and runs in one- and three-day sessions during the summer. For dates and information, click here: https://www.massresort.com/play/basketball-academy/
AWARDS AND RECOGNITION FOR MASSANUTTEN: The National Ski Areas Association honored Massanutten with two awards at its recent annual convention. Longtime Massanutten (and soon-to-retire) Director of Sports and Risk Management Kenny Hess was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award, and the resort won NSAA’s Golden Eagle award for Community and Partnerships. This award recognizes ski areas that foster a collaborative environment in their community, taking advantage of local partnerships to drive results and inspire others into action against climate change. Our thanks to those Massanutten team members who have worked long and hard to shepherd Massanutten’s sustainability efforts – which they do in addition to their regular job roles.
