GM Corner – updated July 28, 2021

To the Massanutten Community:

We’re grateful to report that the summer has been going well so far.  Business is now at 2019 levels, albeit a bit more spread out with some capacity limits in place in areas like the Family Adventure Park and our restaurants.  As always, a huge shout to our staff that make it happen.  (And with many employees who live on the mountain, let me us this forum to publicly say THANK YOU for your hard work).

Now on to a few recent developments in the community. Let’s start with roads. We know that the unannounced re-paving of Resort Drive caused a lot of consternation in the community – deservedly so, in our opinion. Although we knew that Resort Drive would be re-paved at some point this year, neither we nor MPOA had any indication as to when – and, to our chagrin, neither of us were informed before the crews arrived. Resort Drive is maintained by the State, which subs out work like paving to area contractors.

During that first trying day, both MPOA and Massanutten Resort contacted the County and asked for alerts, so we could make sure residents and guests were notified in advance, and for better management of traffic. Although the County was sympathetic, there were further glitches. To the best of our knowledge, the work is now complete, and I do believe the County heard the concerns from both MPOA and the Resort loud and clear.  Barring an emergency situation, I’m reasonably certain it will be quite some time before disruptive road work is required on Resort Drive again. But we’ll do our very best to keep you informed. After all, it wasn’t just area residents who were impacted – our owners and guests were, too. Hopefully, our discussions with VDOT and the County means that communication will improve moving forward.

Speaking of roads: several weeks ago, we became aware of a post on the Massanutten Nextdoor site that indicated that the gravel shoulder on a section of Del Webb Drive was significantly lower than the paved surface. Del Webb is one of the roadways we now maintain, so we immediately dispatched a crew to investigate and take any corrective action necessary. The problem was promptly addressed.

I note this because your input is important. If you see something that concerns you in the community with regard to road maintenance, please let us know. If the roadway in question is one that we maintain, we’ll take care of it. If it’s a road MPOA maintains, we’ll let them know (you can also contact MPOA directly, and MPOA will let us know if there’s something we need to address). Contact us by either emailing us at community@massresort.com or calling Massanutten Security – the phone number is on this page. That’s not limited to just roadways, by the way; recently, a resident mentioned that an area near one of the streams on Resort property was collecting litter. We immediately dispatched a cleanup crew. Keeping our community attractive is important – so if you see something that doesn’t look right, we’d like to know.

On the MPSC front, I’m afraid there’s no progress to report. The proposed acquisition of MPSC is in the hands of Rockingham County, and though we – like you – hope that it will happen, the process is taking longer than any of us hoped. The County IS aware of your concerns – and ours. We all need to be patient.

In my last update I noted Massanutten’s new Mascot team. Kids love them, and MPOA residents are welcome to bring their kids (and grandkids!) to meet them and have photos taken. We’ve set up a regular schedule through the summer – you can meet them every week, weather permitting, at Meet the Mascots – 4:30 pm at Ski Parking Lot #2.  Days may change, so for information on the Mascots and the weekly schedule please click here.

Two final thoughts. I mentioned this a few months back but thought it would be worth a reminder. If you occasionally or regularly rent your home, there’s a property manager called TripForth that you might wish to consider. Many of our timeshare owners use their services to manage rentals if the owners aren’t using or exchanging their weeks. TripForth uses all of the major vacation rental sites to market properties, and offers comprehensive property management services including cleaning, trash removal and minor repairs. We’ve been working with them for more than a year, and continue to be impressed with their level of expertise brought over from their sister company Kees Vacations. You can reach them by emailing their Operations Manager directly via email: melanie.grogg@tripforth.com. You can also stop in to chat with Melanie in person; she shares space at our Rugged Cup Coffee Shop at 11530 Model Road, across from Resort Drive on Route 33.

Last, I’d like to thank MPOA for the continued cooperation our new relationship has brought. Special kudos this time around for MPOA Board Member Kevin Frazier, who offers regular updates on ways Community members can participate in making this wonderful place even better.

Cordially,

Matthias Smith, VP/General Manager, Massanutten Resort
