To the Massanutten Community:
I hope you’re enjoying autumn, and the beginnings of spectacular foliage! Autumn is always a special time here at Massanutten – in addition to warm days, crisp nights and beautiful trees, there’s the excitement of a few more rounds of golf, hiking, mountain biking – and the anticipation of winter and the upcoming ski season.
We’ve got a lot going on this year. Here are some of the highlights:
New lift/Mountain Biking: the new high-speed Peak Express quad lift to the summit is performing brilliantly, and we’re getting great feedback from mountain bikers. We’ll run the lift for scenic lift rides, and Bike Park Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through the end of October. Demand has been very high so please purchase your tickets in advance to guarantee your spot. Come enjoy the foliage or improved bike park offerings.
Improved tubing this winter: We know that demand sometimes exceeded supply in the Tubing Park for the last few winters – and that’s an activity enjoyed by both resort guests and area residents alike. Problem (hopefully) solved: we’ve invested more than $500,000 in additional snowmaking resources for the Tubing Park over the summer. The new fully automated snowmaking machines will provide more snow and additional lanes on a more consistent basis.
New faces in – and a wise older face bowing out: Kenny Hess, our longtime Director of Operations (overseeing snow sports, WaterPark, Golf, etc.) has announced his retirement. He’ll continue with the resort in various functions going forward, but day-to-day oversight of his portfolio will soon be assumed by Kameron Tucker, who has been running the Family Adventure Park. We’re delighted to promote from within! She’ll start in her new role on November 6. We’ll miss seeing Kenny every day, but his retirement is well-earned and the mark he’s made on Massanutten is immeasurable. Please wish him the best when you see him! We’ve also created a new position: Vice President for Marketing. We’re delighted to announce that Mike Owens, who has been with us for more than 15 years (most recently as Director of Hospitality Administration) will assume the role. There will be more new faces announced soon.
New holiday feature: We’re adding a fun new feature for the holidays: Light Up the Park! This will be a massive holiday walk-thru light experience involving many thousands of LED bulbs in a series of stunning arrays, interactive displays and family/group photo opportunities. It will be located at the WaterPark and will operate from November to mid-January. You can learn more here: https://www.massresort.com/play/light-up-the-park/
Mountain Coaster update: Design work is complete, and the new Mountain Coaster is currently being fabricated in France. We expect to begin installation sometime late winter or early spring.
Mid-Mountain Grille upgrades: Crews have been busy working to improve the guest experience at the Mid-Mountain Grille. There will be improved line flow, live music and some new product offerings – along with better seating and hardscapes. Also of note: we plan to do some major upgrades to the Base Lodge next spring and summer.
Cordially,
Matthias Smith, Executive Vice President
