Update 6/27/23: MPSC, Summer Jam, and more

To the Massanutten Community:

Several things to report this time around. First, I’d like to briefly mention some organizational changes at our parent company, The Resorts Companies, Inc. (which, if you didn’t know, is 100% employee owned). Steve Krohn, formerly executive vice president, was promoted to president and chief operating officer. I was promoted to executive vice president. Both of us will continue with our current responsibilities, in addition to readying the Company for future stages of growth. Bottom line: you’ll continue to see us in similar roles at the resort leading our incredible employee-owners.

MPSC: Here’s where things currently stand – and please remember, we’re bystanders in this just as much as you are; the issue today is between MPSC and Rockingham County.

As expected, MPSC rejected the County’s buyout offer. Roughly a month ago, Rockingham County filed in court to condemn the property of MPSC. MPSC has a certain window to respond, though we don’t know the details.

Initial stages of litigation should begin as soon as the second half of the summer. It’s likely to start with a lengthy legal process known as “discovery,” in which both sides will have access to the other side’s records. It’s the discovery process that will give experts the ability to determine a fair market value for MPSC (remember, MPSC refused to cooperate with the County’s previous attempts at valuation).

Ultimately, we expect the case to go to trial in Rockingham County. We also think it likely that MPSC will use every possible excuse and maneuver to delay the process. We think that it’s unlikely that an actual trial will start for at least a year.

WaterPark Open House: Our second WaterPark open house was a lot of fun, and attendance nearly doubled from last year. Part of the fun was a raffle. Ashley Tong won the big prize – two Summer Season Passes to the WaterPark between Memorial Day and Labor Day. And Aaron Ringel won two $25 Arcade Gift Cards, which can be used at the arcades at the WaterPark, Woodstone Recreation and Massanutten Fitness and Recreation.

Scroll down for some pix of the event.

Summer Jam: Normally, our first festival of the year (Valley Fest) is held in May, but we had to postpone it this year due to the construction of the new high-speed quad chairlift. So, our annual Summer Jam will be the first big soiree of the season. It’s coming up on July 3d. Live music, food and more!

In case you didn’t know, all of our major festivals are fundraisers for worthy local not-for-profit organizations (who receive all net proceeds). The annual Summer Jam helps fund the wonderful work of the Rockingham County SPCA. Join us, and help support their efforts to protect and re-home animals!

Cordially,

Matthias Smith, Executive Vice President
