Update 9/26/24: MPSC Rate Case, Road Reports, and October Fun!

To the Massanutten Community:

Several brief items this time. First, allow us to remind you that you can make your voice heard in the upcoming MPSC rate case. Although rates have already gone up, MPSC was required to post a bond of nearly $1 million. Should the SCC decline to raise rates – or to raise them less than MPSC is asking – MPSC will be required to refund the difference to rate payers. The case is still very much active, and now’s the time to make your voice heard.

Key Dates:

  • 10/2 – Deadline for written public comments; Deadline to sign up for the Public Witness Hearing. MPOA members, as members of the community, can do either or both.
  • 10/9 – Public Witness Hearing (by telephone), followed by full Evidentiary Hearing (in person at the Commission in Richmond).
  • November ’24-April ’25 – Post-hearing briefings; hearing officer’s report to SCC; briefings before SCC itself; Commissioners, SCC decision; and appeals.

While MPSC is entitled under Virginia law to recover its costs of service and a reasonable return on equity, rate payers who feel the new rates – which reflect a 25.3% increase in water revenues ($438,819) and an 18.9% increase in wastewater revenues ($438,81) and a target return on equity of 10.75% percent (instead of the 9.25% approved in the last case) – are unreasonable and unjust, you may submit written comments to the State Corporation Commission at the following link:

https://www.scc.virginia.gov/casecomments/comment/PUR-2024-00017

You may also request to testify by telephone on October 9 if you call (804) 371-9141 and request to testify, or if you complete and email the form at this link https://scc.virginia.gov/pages/Public-WitnessInstructions to the SCC at SCCInfo@scc.virginia.gov.

We encourage you to do so.

 October Happenings at the Resort:

We think that almost every time of year is great around here, but October may be our favorite month. Warm days, crisp nights, beautiful foliage – October has it all. We’ve got lots of fun things happening this October – including haunted chairlift rides; a Fall Festival with live music, arts and crafts, food trucks, beer and wine (and more); a Pickleball Tournament, costume contests for both kids and adults – and much more! • Thanks for the query, Mr. Anderson. We’re currently in early design stages for both the sales office and the homes themselves. As you might expect, this development will be built in phases, subject to variables including market conditions. As of right now, we expect that you’ll see some roadwork on Resort Drive to improve access to the site during the first quarter of 2025. We also expect to begin site work (clearing, roadwork, utilities, etc.) in first quarter of 2025. We currently expect actual home construction to begin during the fourth quarter of 2025, with delivery of the first homes tentatively targeted for summer of 2026. You may rest assured that we’ll keep the community updated as this process continues.
