Update – June 8, 2022

To the Massanutten Community:

It was wonderful to see so many of you taking advantage of the open house day at the WaterPark this past Friday.   With everyone enjoying themselves in different areas of the Park, I missed the opportunity to personally greet many of you – but, after all, the true purpose of the event was for you to have fun with your friends, neighbors and families.  The pictures below suggest that it was mission accomplished on that front:

We plan to repeat the event next year as it seems to be a tradition that we can all get behind.

Switching gears: let me take a moment to congratulate the newest members of the MPOA Board and thank those that stepped away after this past election. This community is truly an amazing place in which to live and, in no small part thanks to the MPOA staff and the area residents who volunteer their time to serve on MPOA’s Board.  I think this was a good year for stabilizing the community (a sincere thank you to past President Liz Walker for all that you did on that front!). Looking ahead, I am keen to work with the new Board, its Executive Committee and incoming president Darryl Borgquist.

I wanted to let you know about an important charitable initiative that’s being led by our IT Department, and I invite you to help. It’s called “Hunger Doesn’t Take a Vacation.” The program recognizes that many kids in local schools rely upon breakfasts and lunches provided by the school system – but with school ending, so does that source of nutrition. So our IT Department is leading a food drive to benefit the Greene County Food Pantry’s Backpack Program. Collection points are in the entry area of the Woodstone Recreation Building (on the south side of the building) and the Massanutten Owner’s Administration Building, across the street from the Go-Kart track and the JC Powell Conference Room. Desired items include: * Canned Fruits (peaches, pears, mix) * Canned Vegetables (green beans, corn) * Ravioli, Spaghetti O’s, etc. * Canned Meats (Chicken, Tuna, etc.) * Pork n’ Beans * Flavored Oatmeal Packets * Kids Cereal * Macaroni and Cheese * Canned Soups & Chili.

RESORT UPDATE: The Resort is now full tilt into our summer season. Staff recruitment has seen great improvement from last year, and some additions (with internal promotions) to our management team are already showing positive effects throughout the Resort. That includes the WaterPark, our Food & Beverage areas, the Spa and new amenity additions to be announced soon.

On the sustainability front, our solar installation is going very well at the Woodstone check-in area, and it will hopefully be followed by the WaterPark in the not-too-distant future.   For more information, including new photos, please visit massresort.com/going-green.  Likewise, our Shuttle Beta test is now in full force; for those curious, please visit massresort.com/shuttle.

We do have one small real estate program scheduled for this year – a six-unit expansion of Regal Vista, extension of Chadwick Drive.  Construction is scheduled to begin late this summer/early fall.  We will be sure to do another post to outline more of the specifics of this small addition.

Meanwhile, I thank you for reading and wish you a pleasant start to the summer!

Cordially,

Matthias Smith, Vice President and General Manager, Massanutten Resort

  1. I was just wondering why you choose Greene County for your summer programme rather than Rockingham County. There are many students in need in our own community rather than going over the mountain. Just a comment.

    • Janice – thanks for your query. There are several reasons for this. First, as you know, we do a lot here in Rockingham County – including the meals program we ran during the worst of the pandemic and ongoing support for the EAUS food bank. Second, the resort’s footprint extends beyond Rockingham County. And third, we actively encourage our staff to think beyond their jobs and about how they can help make their communities better places for all. This particular program was an initiative of members of our IT department, some of whom reside in Greene County. They recognized the need and asked for the resort’s approval, which we gladly provided. No one charitable endeavor can solve all problems, but every little bit helps. In the meantime: if you’d like to suggest a comparable program for Rockingham County, please contact us at community@massresort.com. We’re always looking for practical ways that MPOA and the Resort can work together to improve our beautiful part of the world!

  2. Mathias,
Thanks for keeping the community informed with your Community Blog. I read them religiously.
I was especially pleased to learn of the trail building and disappointed to hear that MPSC is not cooperating. I looked for some news regarding the SSLC’s desire to have a conveyer installed near the learning to serve guests who want to work with their children, but do not want to take lessons.
    Friend of the resort,
    Basil
